Open Call for Expressions of Interest
During 2020, Wysing Arts Centre will put broadcasting at the centre of its artistic programme; to connect with remote audiences in a way that enables us to listen, as well as to transmit, ideas using digital and other technologies.
Through exhibitions, events, residencies, retreats and our annual music festival, we will work with a range of artists and contributors across the year to explore how broadcast technologies, in particular radio, can enable the communication of ideas and create dialogue and understanding.
Building on the work of our recent programmes, we will focus on connecting a network of ‘many voices’ made up of those often left out of the conversation, whether due to access requirements, location outside of metropolitan centres, or discrimination due to race, gender and/or sexuality. We will be looking to both amplify voices and enable supportive networks and connections to be made.
Our gallery will become an expanded studio space where ideas are explored, including through exhibitions, commissioned and archival art works, recorded events with live audiences, new collaborations, and through works that are made specifically to be broadcast from Wysing.
It is within this context that we invite expressions of interest from artists to be in-Residence at Wysing during 2020. We are open to when residencies take place so please tell us what would work best for you, and how much funding you will need. We expect to fund most residencies between £1,000-£5,000, to include fees, travel and production.
How to Apply
To make the application process less onerous on artists, we have introduced a two-part process. The first asks for an initial expression of interest in response to the context of our 2020 programme, alongside some background information. Following this initial phase, we will select approximately twenty proposals to be worked up in further detail.
Expressions of interest can be made in writing or recorded to video or audio. We would prefer these to be made online via the website, Submittable. Once you have set up a Submittable account you can return to your expression of interest any time up until the deadline which is midnight on Sunday 15 December 2019. If you would prefer to send your expression of interest by email, please send to firstname.lastname@example.org by the deadline.
You will need to provide responses to the following questions:
Tell us how you would like to respond to our 2020 programme. This could include information on: what you would like to do - who will be in-residence - when you would like to come to Wysing - what you will need to realise your idea (maximum 500 words or a five-minute recording).
Tell us about yourself. This could include information on: your work - your experience - your areas of interest;
(total maximum 500 words or a five-minute recording and up to five image uploads)
Your access requirements.
We are interested in hearing exciting ideas and not in creating unnecessary work for artists. We are happy to receive expressions of interest relating to our 2020 theme that are unpolished, unfinished, speculative or partially recycled from other unsuccessful applications. We are also happy to receive links to websites, or attachments and uploads of already existing material as a response to any of the areas outlined above, all of which can be added to Submittable. The link to Submittable is on our website.
We have produced a FAQ sheet of frequently asked questions which we hope will be helpful. If you would also like an informal phone conversation with a member of the programme team before applying for a residency, please book a time via Eventbrite.
Links to Eventbrite, and the FAQ sheet can be found on our website.
