The Raspberry Pi Foundation and Wysing Arts Centre are inviting applications from artists to participate in a part-time, six month residency, embedded with two Cambridge-based organisations at the leading edge of creativity and innovation.
The Raspberry Pi Foundation is a world-leading educational charity focused on enabling all young people to realise their full potential through the power of computing and digital technology. The Wysing Arts Centre is a rurally-based arts organisation located just outside the city with a global reputation for excellence in artist development.
We share a commitment to inclusivity and creative learning and, through this collaboration, we are looking to support an artist to develop their work and to help us gain new perspectives that can inform our own practice.
The residency will provide the selected artist with the chance to:
- Explore and take risks without the expectation of developing new work.
- Experiment with new approaches, materials and technologies.
- Embed themselves with two unique organisations and engage with their communities.
The residency will suit an artist with an interest in digital technology, although you don't need to use digital technologies as your medium. We are particularly interested in artists who are interested in exploring the intersection between technology, inclusion, and young people.
As part of the residency, there will be an expectation that you will engage with the Raspberry Pi Foundation team and participate in outreach and engagement activities with young people.
Structure
The residency period is six months, part-time in Cambridge.
It will ideally commence in January 2025 until June 2025, although there is flexibility depending on individual circumstances.
The expectation is that the artist will be in person for the majority of the residency, although some remote engagement is also possible. We are flexible about how time is split between the two sites and will work with the selected artist to find what works best for you.
Fees, expenses, and access to resources
The artist will be paid a maximum of £13,260 for the residency. This is calculated on the basis of 52 days total at the Artist Union pay rate of £255 per day and is inclusive of all taxes. This is a contribution towards the artist's living costs and expenses.
The artist can additionally claim for reasonable incurred expenses including:
- Research budget: up to maximum of £5,000
- Travel & subsistence: up to a maximum of £3,000
- Public engagement (e.g. events or workshops): up to a maximum of £2,000
At the Raspberry Pi Foundation, the artist will have access to the Central Cambridge office facilities at 37 Hills Road, including access to:
- Workshop / makerspace
- Desk space
- Meeting space
- Staff away days, workshops and events
At Wysing Arts Centre the artist will have access to free and accessible accommodation throughout the residency period in Bourn, Cambridgeshire, including capacity for dependants/family members where needed. In addition, the artist will have access to:
- Ceramics studio
- Recording studio
- Studio space
- Meeting space
- 11 acres of land
- The Farmhouse Library
- On-site parking
The artist will also be able to access curatorial support from the Wysing team and will have opportunities to work with the learning experience and communications teams at the Raspberry Pi Foundation.
Eligibility
This residency is available to contemporary artists living, and with the right to work, in the UK.
It is not open to artists currently in formal education, including postgraduate study.
No previous experience of working with technology is required but an interest in technology is essential.
Previous experience of working with young people is preferred.
We particularly welcome applications from artists who come from backgrounds that are currently under-represented in the art and technology sectors.
Application process
Applications should be received by 9th October 2024. It is important that applying artists fully research Wysing Arts Centre and Raspberry Pi Foundation to see, if successful, what kind of context you would be entering.
In your application, please provide the following:
- Artist Statement (up to 200 words or a 2 minute video statement)
- A short statement about your interest in the residency, highlighting why it is relevant to your practice at this point in your career, and how you would approach engaging with Wysing Art Centre and Raspberry Pi Foundation’ (up to 300 words or a 3 minute video statement)
- 10 images, clearly captioned in the image title, with short descriptions of each image if necessary (up to 75 words per image).
- Video/audio links (Optional. Up to 3) *Excerpts preferred.
- CV / resume of no more than 2 pages.
A joint selection panel will review the applications and three artists will be invited to interview in the week commencing 21st October 2024.
Interviews will be in person, in Cambridge, with members of the Raspberry Pi Foundation and Wysing Arts Centre. Artists invited for an interview will receive a fee of £500 to cover time and travel costs. At the interview, you will be invited to give a presentation on how you would use the residency, even if this may change.
